LACUNA COIL’s CRISTINA SCABBIA Interviewed By TotalRock Radio At U.K.’s BLOODSTOCK OPEN AIR (Video)

cristinascabbiatotalrock2014_638

Hayley Leggs of TotalRock Radio conducted an interview with vocalist Cristina Scabbia of Italian heavy rockers LACUNA COIL at this year’s edition of the Bloodstock Open Air festival, which was held August 7-10 at Catton Hall, Walton-On-Trent, West Midlands, United Kingdom. You can now watch the chat below.

LACUNA COIL‘s latest studio album, “Broken Crown Halo”, sold around 13,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 27 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD arrived in stores on April 1 via Century Media.

“Broken Crown Halo” was recorded Italy by producer Jay Baumgardner (P.O.D., SEVENDUST, EVANESCENCE, PAPA ROACH) and engineer Kyle Hoffmann (P.O.D., BUSH, ZEBRAHEAD). The effort was mastered by Howie Weinberg, whose credits include RAMMSTEIN, SOUNDGARDEN, NIRVANA, DEFTONES and SHERYL CROW.

Asked if she is satisfied with how “Broken Crown Halo” has been received by the fans and music critics alike, Scabbia told GetYourRockOut: “I’m very happy. Honestly, when we put out records, we don’t really think about the response we could have or what people could think about it, not because we don’t care about the music press or the fans at all, because we love our fans and the press, but it was more like a self -therapy. It’s like writing a diary and translating it with words and music for us. So if people like it, good. If people don’t like it, I mean, it’s just like, we’ve been honest and we put out something that we think is honest from our side. We could have repeated ourselves over and over with older albums, just because people like them and just like, ‘Oh, this is gonna be good, because it’s gonna be sounding kind of like that.’ But we’re just not like that. So I’m totally happy that people [are] liking it. I think it’s a great combination between our roots and the new influences, because you want to evolve as well.”

LACUNA COIL is currently touring as a quintet following the departures of guitarist Cris “Pizza” Migliore and drummer Cristiano “Criz” Mozzati. Marco “Maus” Biazzi is handling all guitar duties for the band while drummer Ryan Blake Folden is sitting behind the kit.

of double bass deserts of Grey.
Metallic the melodies meld in the moonlight,

As the blood runs black, there’s no turning back,

The Hourglass

WoM0031

The Hourglass is a symphonic/gothic/industrial metal band, formed by Alma Vomastek (vocals, keyboards, songwriting, lyrics), Bogdan Mara (drums) and Vlad Negrea (guitar), in the city of Cluj-Napoca, Romania. The name was carefully chosen to represent a connection between old and new, classical and modern (musically speaking) and also, to keep a general idea that everything that has a beginning, also has an end.

The band started as a studio project, having only a 4-5 songs demo recording in plan. The main reason to start this way is that a band cannot aim high or represent any interest to the local scene until there are at least some demo quality songs to be presented to the local public on social networks (Facebook, Reverbnation or Myspace).
The goal of The Hourglass was to create something new, something that could combine different genres into a new sound. After many musical experiments in songwriting regarding subjects, atmosphere and sounds used, the band crystallized a sound represented by heavy guitars and strong rhythmics, symphonic and industrial keyboard sounds, all combined with a classical soprano voice. A symphonic/industrial metal hybrid.

On the 30th of December 2011,The Hourglass released online the first self-produced studio material, “Requiem”, a 5 songs demo that represents a mixture of feelings, harmonies and styles. Mircea Petreus joined the crew with his bass skills right before the last two songs were recorded. From a ballad (In Remembrance) to a strong industrial metal influenced song (The Fall), they tried to explore the strongest human beliefs and feelings.

The spring of 2012 brings the last missing member in the band: Ioana Dirva, a pianist drawn by the idea of playing on a synthesizer and trying a different musical approach. After a strong live debut as an opening act for Theatres des Vampires (Italy) in Cluj-Napoca on the 20th of April 2012, one of the founding members, Vlad Negrea (guitar) left the band for personal reasons, followed by Mircea Petreus (bass), three months later. Even so, the formula of five was completed quick, without affecting the band’s rehearsals schedule and upcoming concerts. With Andrei Buciuta (guitar) and Traian Toderean (bass), The Hourglass was complete again, ready to rock the local stage (and more) with the new members and songs.

The end of 2013 comes with line-up changes: Andrei and Traian left the band due to the tight schedule of their studies, to be replaced in a short time by none other than Vlad Negrea, who takes the guitarist role once again, joining the band together with a new friend: Cristian Florea (the bassist of Shadowsail).

The Hourglass’s debut album, “Through Darkness And Light” was released on the 28th of March 2014, so let’s see what this will  bring to the table for this band!

ASTARTE’s MARIA ‘TRISTESSA’ KOLOKOURI Dies

mariaastartedied_638

Maria Kolokouri, better known as Tristessa, the vocalist of the Greek black metal band ASTARTE, has died from complications of leukemia.

Kolokouri‘s husband Nick Maiis has released the following statement regarding her passing:

Maria, she’s left from this world.

“You are leaving a lot behind and my soul is in pain.

“You are a special person, you are my wife. I will always adore you, our son and everybody that they love you. I will always honor you and you will never be forgotten.

“Until we meet again, my love, I will kiss you from inside of my soul.”

ASTARTE in 2013 announced plans to enter the studio to record its sixth full-length album, “Blackdemonium”.

The band’s fifth CD, “Demonized”, was released in 2007 via Avantgarde Music.

Asked in an interview what “Astarte” stood for an what the band’s goals were, Tristessa said: “Astarte is the great goddess of fertility, beauty and war. She is the Phoenician predecessor to the Greek Aphrodite. Her counterparts are well known to all of us, for instance to the Sumerians, she was known as Innanna, to the Babylonians as Ishtar, and so forth. She was associated with the moon and called Mother of the Universe, so her background fits to the Greek pagan spirit.”

She added: “Our goal is to create the absolute personal music style and to show that music and generally art belongs to everybody. The world of art welcome all those who have feelings, imagination and creativity and each one shall take what he or she deserves.”

In a 2007 interview with Metal-Rules.com, Tristessa said about the songwriting process for ASTARTE: “First of all, I need to have some conditions that will help me to start composing music. My mind needs to be in total self control and sadness is very helping factor to transform my thoughts into the music.

“I record my ideas to a small console that I have in my bedroom. Once I gather a lot of ideas (hours of riffing ideas), I choose and unify them, to find the metronomes and to make a skeleton of a song. Then is the right time to meet the band and to enrich my riffs in order to work on final formation/skeleton of every song.

“For the aggressive songs, we gave emphasis to the guitars to be more aggressive, riffings are not so melodic and drums are faster and raw and straight in your face.

“I have to use everything, I cannot exclude something or to put limits.

“Sometimes I feel that my riffs are not into black or death and i feel that I play another kind of music, but even at that time, I have the flexibility to transform every idea into black/death.

“Melodies can be translated to all kinds of music and I get inspired from all kinds of music.

“I am very good at making a simple melody into a real composition and to preview the role of every instrument.

“The most important, for me, is how clever you can translate an idea into a good riff.”

Details On New Album “A Lesser Key Of Solomon” Revealed By A Sound Of Thunder

A Sound of ThunderD.C. area metal act A Sound of Thunder will release its fourth full-length album “The Lesser Key of Solomon” on September 9th worldwide via the band’s own Mad Neptune Records. The album was produced by RIAA multi-platinum-awarded producer Kevin ‘131’ Gutierrez (While Heaven Wept, Raven, Shinedown). The heavy riff-laden songs are complex yet instantly catchy, featuring razor-sharp musicianship and the lung-busting performances of powerhouse classically-trained vocalist Nina Osegueda.

“If your erection lasts longer than four hours, you probably listened to our new album. Also, you’re welcome” jokes Osegueda. “On a serious note, this album is our best work to date. The songwriting and performances from the band are on another level. The album was a joy to make and that comes through in the final recording.”

Hot off the 2013 release of “Time’s Arrow” (see review here), the band’s best-selling and best reviewed release to date, A Sound of Thunder was brimming with confidence and eager to get back into the recording studio. With too many musical ideas for just one album, the band selected only its darkest and most atmospheric material for “The Lesser Key of Solomon.” The result is an ominous collection of songs united by supernatural themes. The album represents the fulfillment of a promise to A Sound of Thunder’s fans, known as the “Legion of Thunder”, who funded the album via the Kickstarter crowd-funding platform in the autumn of 2013, raising over $23,000.

“The Lesser Key of Solomon” running time of 61 minutes, features 10 of A Sound of Thunder’s most intense yet nuanced songs, exploring territory which is simultaneously heavier and more atmospheric than ever before. The steel-armored wail of prodigal vocalist Nina Osegueda (called by some “the lovechild of Rob Halford and Bruce Dickinson”) tops off deft performances by a band that knows how to deliver the goods. From the demonic fire of “Udoroth”, to the crushing Dio-esque “Master of Pain”, to the sweeping scope and dark theatricality of “Elijah”, A Sound of Thunder delivers a timeless album full of metal classics.

“The Lesser Key Of Solomon” available as a digital download, compact disc, and limited deluxe vinyl-book format. The cover art, shown below, as well as all the pieces contained in the deluxe edition and CD booklets were created by Dusan Markovic.

The track listing for the album is:

1. Nexus Of Realities
2. Udoroth
3. Fortune Teller
4. The Boy Who Could Fly
5. Elijah
6. Master Of Pain
7. Blood From The Mummy’s Tomb
8. Black Secrets
9. One Empty Grave
10. House Of Bones
