A Sound of Thunder

Formation, EP and Single (2009-2010)

Formed in 2008 by founding members Josh Schwartz (on guitar) and Chris Haren (on drums), the band went through several early line-up changes before recruiting vocalist Nina Osegueda (formerly of another DC area metal band) in October 2009. In late 2009 the band recorded their self-titled debut EP, with former bassist Chris Willett back in a session capacity. The band soon recruited bassist David Matine and recorded a benefit single for the West Memphis 3, which received press and acclaim from both the WM3 website and Motorhead. David Matine left the band in early 2010 and was replaced by Ben Washburn on bass. The band began gigging extensively around the Washington DC area with Washburn on bass, and began recording what would become their first full length album, Metal Renaissance. Washburn left the band in summer 2010 before completing the album, and Jesse Keen was recruited to act as both bassist and keyboard player. The band played mostly local shows and opened for various touring bands. They also played Flight of the Valkyries in Baltimore, MD.

Metal Renaissance (2011)

In March 2011, the band released their first full length album, Metal Renaissance. The album included an instrumental intro by local folk group Painted Trillium ,and was recorded on tape in an attempt to capture a classic analog sound. Bassists Ben Washburn and Jesse Keen both perform on the album. The band continued to play local shows, but also travelled to Chicago forDame-Nation, a female fronted metal festival similar to Flight of the Valkyries.

Out of the Darkness (2012)

A Sound of Thunder decided to go in a different direction with their second album, Out of the Darkness. The band hired Kevin “131” Gutierrez, known for being a multi platinum award winning producer and having worked with Shinedown, O.A.R, Johnny Cash, and Raven. They recorded the album at Gutierrez’ own studio, Assembly Line Studios in Northern Virginia. The band intended on releasing the album independently, but was suddenly contacted by Lance King and Nightmare Records days before their intended release date. After postponing the release, in coordination with the label, Out of the Darkness was finally released by Nightmare Records and Sony/RED on March 27, 2012. Having included a track with guest vocalist John Gallagher of the legendary heavy metal band, Raven, both the album and the band received more publicity than ever before. Out of the Darkness was released with rave reviews from various blogs, heavy metal websites, About.com, and The Washington Post. In addition to the album, the band also released their first music video for “Murderous Horde”. The video, which featured Nina Osegueda and a black Burmese python named “Chubby”, received over five thousand views in its first week. This was followed by a video for “Kill That Bitch”.

Time’s Arrow & Queen of Hell (2013)

In 2013, A Sound of Thunder released an EP (Queen of Hell) and an album (Time’s Arrow), both on CD and vinyl through Mad Neptune Records. The album and EP were partially funded by a successful KickStarter campaign that raised $9,539, $1,539 over their initial $8,000 goal.

The Lesser Key of Solomon (2014)

In 2014, A Sound of Thunder continued to create another KickStarter campaign to help fund a 4th album, “The Lesser Key of Solomon”. The campaign raised $23,375, $13,375 over their initial $10,000 goal. The album was released on September 9th and made 39th place in the Billboard (magazine) Heatseeker’s Chart.

In July 2014 A Sound of Thunder was one of the 8 bands to perform at the inaugural Women of Metal Fest

A Sound of Thunder

A Sound of Thunder

Based out of the Washington DC area, A Sound of Thunder (taken from the Ray Bradbury short story of the same name) specialize in a decibel-pushing mix of classic hard rock and classic power metal that invokes names like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Dio. Built around the powerhouse vocals of classically trained opera singer Nina Osegueda, the band was formed in 2008 by guitarist Josh Schwartz and drummer Chris Haren. Their eponymous debut EP appeared in 2009, followed by the full-length Metal Renaissance in 2011. For their sophomore outing, 2012’s Out of Darkness, the band enlisted the help of platinum award-winning producer Kevin “131” Gutierrez, and in 2013 and 2014 they issued the Kickstarter-funded Time’s Arrow and The Lesser Key of Solomon, respectively, the former of which featured a guest vocal from Blaze Bayley (Wolfsbane, Iron Maiden)

Meden Agan

Release of the album is scheduled for 22nd of September 2014 by “No Regrets Records”. Meden Agan were formed back in November 2005 in Paris, France by guitarist Diman Koutsogiannopoulos. Their first demo was released in April 2006 and received very good reviews and feedback. Later on they recorded their debut full-length album entitled “Illusions” which was released in November 2007. It contained epic/progressive metal songs with male vocals. During that period, the band shared the stage with bands like Pain Salvation, Skyclad, Within Temptation, After All, Bloodtales, ETHS, and The Old Dead Tree.

In February 2013, Meden Agan parted ways with lead vocalist Iliana due to musical differences. After 5 months of auditions, coloratura soprano Maya Kampaki joined the band and together with Meden Agan’s original drummer and main lyricist, who returned behind the drumkit, the band entered ARTemis studios late 2013 to record their new album entitled “Lacrima Dei”. Mastering was done at Finnvox studios, Finland by – the well known – Mika Jussila (Nightwish, Children of Bodom, Stratovarius).

Selene is a fresh new Symphonic Metal band from L/Derry in Northern Ireland.Bringing together a mix of soaring Operatic vocals, infectious hooks and hardhitting metal they bring forward a signature Symphonic Metal sound without losing the Metal Edge.

Selene was founded in 2013 by John Connor and Shonagh Lyons. Having previously worked together in Gate XIII when Shonagh performed vocals on one track of their 2012 EP Once Upon a Time and acted as Lead vocalist in the following live shows, they decided to start a band playing Symphonic Metal that would fit well in a live environment.

After Among the Frozen the line up was expanded in order to further the band’s sound and allow for live playing. First Thomas Alford joined on bass which saw the release of “Sweetest Dreams” and their first music video and shortly after, Cameron Ahslund-Glass took over drums. Selene are currently working on completing their debut album which is due for release in 2014.

Lyria is a Brazilian Symphonic Alternative Metal band. It was idealized and founded by the singer and songwriter Aline Happ in 2012.

The name Lyria was inspired by the Greek Mythology and the lyre that was an important musical instrument for the Greeks. It is also related to the flower lily and to the word lyrics.

In the end of 2012, Lyria presented its first song called Reflection inspired by the Narcissus Myth. The song was really well received especially in Europe and in The United States. In 2013, Eliezer Andre (drums) and Thiago Zig (bass) joined Lyria as official members.

In 2014, the band decided to take a break from concerts and focused on its first album that was produced through a successful crowdfunding campaign where fans from different parts of the world got really engaged with the cause.

Details On New Album “A Lesser Key Of Solomon” Revealed By A Sound Of Thunder

A Sound of ThunderD.C. area metal act A Sound of Thunder will release its fourth full-length album “The Lesser Key of Solomon” on September 9th worldwide via the band’s own Mad Neptune Records. The album was produced by RIAA multi-platinum-awarded producer Kevin ‘131’ Gutierrez (While Heaven Wept, Raven, Shinedown). The heavy riff-laden songs are complex yet instantly catchy, featuring razor-sharp musicianship and the lung-busting performances of powerhouse classically-trained vocalist Nina Osegueda.

“If your erection lasts longer than four hours, you probably listened to our new album. Also, you’re welcome” jokes Osegueda. “On a serious note, this album is our best work to date. The songwriting and performances from the band are on another level. The album was a joy to make and that comes through in the final recording.”

Hot off the 2013 release of “Time’s Arrow” (see review here), the band’s best-selling and best reviewed release to date, A Sound of Thunder was brimming with confidence and eager to get back into the recording studio. With too many musical ideas for just one album, the band selected only its darkest and most atmospheric material for “The Lesser Key of Solomon.” The result is an ominous collection of songs united by supernatural themes. The album represents the fulfillment of a promise to A Sound of Thunder’s fans, known as the “Legion of Thunder”, who funded the album via the Kickstarter crowd-funding platform in the autumn of 2013, raising over $23,000.

“The Lesser Key of Solomon” running time of 61 minutes, features 10 of A Sound of Thunder’s most intense yet nuanced songs, exploring territory which is simultaneously heavier and more atmospheric than ever before. The steel-armored wail of prodigal vocalist Nina Osegueda (called by some “the lovechild of Rob Halford and Bruce Dickinson”) tops off deft performances by a band that knows how to deliver the goods. From the demonic fire of “Udoroth”, to the crushing Dio-esque “Master of Pain”, to the sweeping scope and dark theatricality of “Elijah”, A Sound of Thunder delivers a timeless album full of metal classics.

“The Lesser Key Of Solomon” available as a digital download, compact disc, and limited deluxe vinyl-book format. The cover art, shown below, as well as all the pieces contained in the deluxe edition and CD booklets were created by Dusan Markovic.

The track listing for the album is:

1. Nexus Of Realities
2. Udoroth
3. Fortune Teller
4. The Boy Who Could Fly
5. Elijah
6. Master Of Pain
7. Blood From The Mummy’s Tomb
8. Black Secrets
9. One Empty Grave
10. House Of Bones
