Burning Daisy are a Calgary based keg full of inebriated rock. Melodically angry guitar riffs float between powerful haunting vocals, and heavy, crashing drums all swimming in a haze of rumbling bass lines.
Liz Pomeroy sits down with our own Jayson Shell Saturday August 10 to discuss Burning Daisy, their music and much more.

TJ Fowler of Skullbanger.net recently conducted an interview with former AFTER FOREVER frontwoman and current NIGHTWISH touring singer Floor Jansen about her REVAMP project. You can now listen to the chat using the SoundCloud widget below.
REVAMP‘s second album, “Wild Card”, will be released in Europe on August 23 via Nuclear Blast Records. The CD was recorded at SandLane Studio in Rijen, The Netherlands with Joost van den Broek (ex-AFTER FOREVER) and will feature guest choir parts by Marcela Bovio (STREAM OF PASSION) and Daniël de Jongh (TEXTURES).
“Wild Card” track listing:
01. The Anatomy Of A Nervous Breakdown: On The Sideline
02. The Anatomy Of A Nervous Breakdown: The Limbic System
03. Wild Card
06. The Anatomy Of A Nervous Breakdown: Neurasthenia
07. Distorted Lullabies
09. I Can Become
10. Misery’s No Crime
11. Wolf and Dog
12. Sins (bonus track)
The CD features additional guest appearances by Mark Jansen (EPICA), Johan van Stratum (STREAM OF PASSION) and Devin Townsend.
The opening track, “The Anatomy Of A Nervous Breakdown: On The Sideline”, was released as a digital iTunes single on July 19.
Regarding the album title, Jansen states: “This album became the most aggressive album I’ve ever made and in the lyrics I tell a lot about my personal experiences of the last years. This resulted into some heavy stories and some open-hearted ‘screams’ I needed out of my system. It matches the violence of the music in a great way; we wrote as a great team! But not one sentence or word can really cover the contents of this album. Its variety in all its ingredients makes it almost impossible.
“A wild card is an unpredictable and unforeseeable factor. You don’t know what you’re getting, or when. That’s this album! It’s 100% REVAMP and it’s your wild card!”
The “Wild Card” cover artwork was created by Richard Stark of NI Concept And Design. Jansen explains: “I am the queen of hearts on it, who is a wild card herself. You see a ‘nice’ and a ‘nasty’ queen. The nasty one has a cracked lip, cuts in her face and a bleeding heart in her hand. The other queen looks nice even though queens of hearts never truly are…
“Again, what is it you’re going to get? In that respect it visualizes the music, from aggressive and nasty to melodic and pretty. This theme has been important to me personally throughout my career and also in this album I played with it to the max. I used my voice in so many different ways now! The music invited me to do this.
“I am super proud of the amazing guitar riffs, the versatile and groovy but mega tight drums and the keyboard sounds and arrangements that bring something new to the table.
“We hope you like our wild card!”
REVAMP recently announced the addition of bassist Henk Vonk to the group’s ranks. He replaces Jaap Melman, who left REVAMP before the band entered the studio to begin recording its second album. The CD was eventually completed with the help of STREAM OF PASSION bassist Johan van Stratum, who filled in on short notice and “did an amazing job to record and edit the bass parts,” according to a press release.
Floor previously stated about the making of “Wild Card”: “Never before in my career I faced a situation like the one we were in with this album. It was a huge challenge because of several reasons. My sickness caused a major break between the first album and tours, plus the writing of the first ideas for the second album and the actual finalization of those songs and the album. And right at the moment we started to pick everything back up after I was sick, I joined NIGHTWISH. Like a winter and a summer storm, they bring unexpected things, some nasty ones and some amazingly wonderful!
“Also the recording of this album was unlike any I did before because I was on tour with NIGHTWISH most of the time. Guided by Joost van den Broek, the talented musicians of REVAMP recorded all the instruments, and when I came back to The Netherlands, I stepped into the studio to find a rough diamond. A shiny dark crystal: ready for my vocals. That was magical! The singing went smoother than ever before. The lyrics are like a roadmap through our storms and through my personal detours and horrors.
“With pride we can announce our partner in crime from the first album will again join forces with us! Metal and rock giant Nuclear Blast will again make sure REVAMP‘s new album reaches YOUR music collection wherever you are on this metal-loving planet!!!
“Nuclear Blast knows about storms and their metal heart beats like ours. I am very exited they will release this album! The team is so good and with such great people I have no doubts our cooperation will again be fantastic.”
REVAMP‘s self-titled debut album was released in Europe on May 28, 2010 via Nuclear Blast Records.
Jansen made her live debut as the frontwoman of NIGHTWISH on October 1, 2012 at Showbox Sodo in Seattle, Washington.
Jansen handled lead-vocal duties on NIGHTWISH‘s recent North American, South American, Australian and U.K. tours after the group parted ways with Anette Olzon at the end of September 2012.

CRYSTAL VIPER has also prepared unique, and one-of-a-kind surprise for its fans: everyone can be special guest on the new CRYSTAL VIPER album!

“Inviting special guests that were recording with us is already kind of tradition for CRYSTAL VIPER, but this time we decided to go one step further, and we decided to invite people who are most important for us, people who give us energy and strenght to continue: our fans!”
“Here’s the deal: we want to have YOUR scream on the next CRYSTAL VIPER album! And ANY scream is welcomed! How to do it? Metal Injection took ’80s hard rock queen Lita Ford on an adventure to one of the most renowned guitar shops in New York City, Matt Umanov Guitars. Find out what Lita looks for in a guitar by watchin the clip below.
Lita Ford has set “The Bitch Is Back… Live” as the title of her new live album, due on October 28 via SPV/Steamhammer.
Ford has recruited Bobby Rock (VINNIE VINCENT INVASION, NELSON) to sit behind the kit for her shows in Australia, Europe and the U.S., as well as the recent Monsters Of Rock cruise in the Bahamas.
Lita‘s touring drummer for much of 2012 was Scot Coogan, who has previously played with BRIDES OF DESTRUCTION, ACE FREHLEY and LYNCH MOB.
Lita‘s current touring lineup:
* Lita Ford – Guitar, Vocals
* Mitch Perry (MSG, ASIA, EDGAR WINTER) – Guitar
* Bobby Rock (VINNIE VINCENT INVASION, NELSON) – Drums
* Marty O’Brien (WE ARE THE FALLEN, TOMMY LEE, STATIC-X, DISTURBED) – Bass
Lita last year filmed a video for the song “Mother” in Joshua Tree, California. Directing the clip was Ford‘s former THE RUNAWAYS bandmate Victory Tischler-Blue, whose film “Edgeplay” was based on her tenure in the 1970s all-girl teenage rock act.
“Mother” is dedicated to Lita‘s estranged sons, Rocco and James (father is former NITRO singer Jim Gillette).
Ford‘s latest album, “Living Like A Runaway”, was released on June 19, 2012 in North America. The effort was made available in four configurations: a double LP, limited-edition CD, standard CD and digital download. The artwork for the album was created by famed rock photographer Mark Weiss.
Tharsh infused Doom Metaller’s CASTLE will release their second album “Blacklands” on September 11th on their new North American label PROSTHETIC RECORDS. ‘Blacklands’, the band’s second album, was recorded at Sharkbite Studios in Oakland, California and produced by Billy Anderson (Neurosis, Eyehategod, Sleep). “It’s an altogether different beast to ‘In Witch Order’” is how Mat describes it. “The debut took five years start-to-finish, whereas the new one was done relatively quickly, in six months. It was deliberate on our part to do it like that. We wanted to have a live feel and an edginess to the album and I think we got that. It sounds bigger and hits harder. And I wanted the songs to be epic. There were elements of that on our debut but I deliberately set out to achieve that with most of these songs.”
That said, ‘Blacklands’ still features classic-sounding heavy metal songs with a thrash temperament, huge character and fluid solos. It’s an album of great riffs and strong songs, the backbone of Castle’s sound. The album also boasts the classic power trio swagger. “The power trio aspect is one of our strengths as a band,” Mat says. “I love that sound.”
Originally conceived by guitarist, songwriter and producer Mat Davis as a solo project, a meeting of hearts and minds gave the necessary impetus to create a band to finally bring his songs to life. “I met my wife Elizabeth [Blackwell] in 2009,” he explains. “At that point I had already written and demoed most of the songs that would end up on our debut album ‘In Witch Order’. I had tried several times to start a band in San Francisco to no avail. Meeting Liz” – who would go on to become the band’s vocalist and bassist – “breathed new life into the project. We began working on vocal melodies for the songs which at that time were mainly instrumentals, and soon after I reached out to Al McCartney, an old friend and musical collaborator from Toronto to play drums on the record that had started to take shape.”
Having decided on the name Castle the band recorded their debut album ‘In Witch Order’ which was released by Germany’s Ván Records in the spring of 2011. On its release, as both a CD and vinyl LP, ‘In Witch Order’ picked up a number of accolades including Metal Hammer Norway’s album of the year as well as Roadburn Festival’s ‘newcomer of the year’.
Saturday on The Women of Metal Show on Insane Realm Radio Jayson Shell will be interviewing Genevieve Rodda from our October 2012 Band of the Month Winner Temtris. Yeah we know it’s about time right?
Displaying an infectious blend of technical skill and powerful song-writing ability, Temtris are taking their unique sound and appeal to the world.
Temtris are a metal curiosity, a direct result of the band’s constant conviction to their craft and their fans. Featuring founding members Anthony Roberts (Guitar) and Genevieve Rodda (Vocals) and joined by drumming legend Wayne Campbell (Mortal Sin, Grungeon), in 2002, the group sought a more aggressive edge, and enrolled guitarist/songwriter Llew ‘Ahzael’ Smith (Deiform, Malice, Ravensgate) and Aaron “Azgard” Worboys (Malice, Bane of Isildur) on bass.
Losing Wayne and Aaron to other commitments the band discovered a young and talented drummer in their home town by the name of Tom Wallace, quickly dubbed ‘The Machine’ for his machine-gun like double kick abilities, followed by bass guitarist Gavin Swan.
It had been a long time between albums and fueled by the enthusiasm of the new recruits Temtris headed back to the studio. The result was ‘Masquerade’ a dark and edgy collection of songs which in many ways pushed the band further into the ‘unique’ label with its raw sound and musical experimentation. Temtris continue to carve their own unique and dynamic musical niche in the metal realm. Temtris became “Dark Metal”.
The departure of Tom and Gavin saw Temtris on the hunt again for a competant rhythm section.
Enter Dale Green (Delinquent, Soul Trickery) on bass and James Rodwell (The Mud Luck Trio) on drums.
This line up combined with newly enlisted producer Syd Green (Mantissa, Dirty Lucy, Iota, Matt Tonks) has produced one of Temtris’ most exciting songs to date in “Your time has come”.
As always happens, life makes it difficult for bands to stay together and this saw the departure of James leaving an open spot on the throne for a young and very talented drummer by the name of Ben Hart (Eyes of Idevale). Now with one of the strongest line ups to date the studio awaits.

4 Words. Rock N’ Fucking Roll
Ottawa’s premiere female fronted alternative punk band recently released their second album, titled “The Ragdoll Diaries”, a hard hitting follow up to the popular debut ‘Inside The Dollhouse’.
Doll, a four-piece based out of Ottawa, Canada, formed in 2005 provides the missing link between punk and rock, a sound that’s been lacking in mainstream music for quite some time. In a time of oversaturation of commercially designed and developed music to subdue the listener into a false sense of marketability, Doll’s fresh and honest songs cut through like a hot knife through butter, snapping the listener out of their daze and onboard their trip of truth and beautifully crafted angst through sound and vision. Inspired by the great bands such as Sonic Youth, Hole and L7, Paramore, Flyleaf and Die Mannequin, Doll is on its way to becoming a musical force to be reckoned with, inspiring, creative, and honest.
The Ragdoll Diaries is undoubtedly Doll’s best works to date, working alongside producer Jason Jaknunas, Christina Kasper’s lyrics and vocal performance provides a call to all, to stand and believe in yourself, take action, to never be silent. The intensity of the drum and bass, emphasized by the intricate guitar work and atmospheric solo’ing rounds out an album that has it all, creative musicianship, honest lyrics, and a truth that’s been missing in music for some time. Supported by the fearlessly rocking threesome of Pete Kasper, Nick ‘Chopz’ Richer and newcomer to the Doll family Alex Vance, this is one band that you don’t want to miss getting in on the party early and staying for days while you zone out the beautifully crafted yet fiercely hard hitting tunes.
2012 saw great advances for the band, completing several successful Eastern Canadian tours, and breaking into the US market on their first ever tour through America, their live show is evolving and becoming one of the highlights of Canadian music. With strong performances at year’s past festivals such as the Ottawa Bluesfest, IndieWeek Canada, NXNE, and D-Tox Rockfest, a strong review in many major publications such as Outburn and Revolver Magazines, sharing the stage with Protest The Hero, Lacuna Coil, Three Days Grace and tons more, to selling out over 1000 copies of both albums and 500 vinyls of the Ragdoll Diaries, video plays across MuchMusic and MusiquePlus, and ever increasing radio plays, the band has embraced DIY to its highest degree continually improving its social media reach and brand awareness.
Just recently launching their newest music video for the song “Youth of Today, Hope for Tomorrow”, being their 3rd video to date. Doll was also nominated for Best Rock album of 2009 by the Ottawa Xpress, Best Hard Rock band of 2010 and of 2011 by the Ottawa Xpress and Best Album in 2012 receiving honourable mention status.
Doll was selected by the Canadian Independent Recording Artists’ Association and is now being mentored by Canadian Electronica band Austra. You can expect big things from Doll in the near future! 2013 will prove to be a game changer not only for the band, but the Canadian musical landscape, with plans to return to the US and to branch out even further into Canadian markets.
