GRACE DISGRACED The Primal Cause: Womanumental

Grace DisgracedThe band was founded in 2004 in Moscow by its permanent female vocalist Polina “Grace Dis” Berezko. In 2005 Aleksandr Klaptsov (guitar) joined the band – and now he is the band’s main composer . The first gig took place in famous R-club in May 2005. Although the style couldn’t be identified as death metal, the fiery mix of heavy, black and thrash drew public attention and there followed a set of gigs in Moscow, Tula, Taganrog, Rostov-on-Don. Grace Disgraced recorded their first demo “Natural Death” in winter 2005-2006. Then some years of constant membership changes followed.

In 2009 the band was ready to record their EP “Materialized Expectation” on NAVAHOHUT studio. The EP was brought out on MOREHATE Prod. within a 4-way split. In 2010 Yury Korotovskikh (ex-“Rest in Pain”, “Fatal Band”, “Drauggard”) joined the band as a bass-player and Andrey Ischenko (ex-“Hieronymus Bosch”, ex-“Scrambled Defuncts”, ex-“Mortem”) – as a drummer. These members contributed to the recording of Grace Disgraced first full-length album “Enthrallment Traced”. The album was recorded, mixed and mastered by Arkady Navaho in 2010 – 2011. Meanwhile there were again some personnel rearrangements which took place – Andrey Andreev (ex-“Scream in Darkness”, ex-“Formalin”) became GD’s bass-player instead of Yury Korotovskikh. Andrey’s playing perfectly fits in the musical concept of the band. After the first album “Enthrallment Traced” publication in 2012 the band went touring in Ukraine with 2 Italian bands “Homicide Hagridden” and “Black Propoganda”. It is worth saying that the debut LP was warmly accepted in Europe, and a great number of positive reviews from abroad is a telling argument. In the beginning of 2013 the Russian tour followed, then a row of shows in Moscow and other cities. At the same time the band worked on their second LP, which was recorded on NAVAHOHUT studio again. Promo-track from this album “She Smells Death” has become a real hit on “Russian Death Metal” CD-compilation, and Grace Disgraced played as a headliner at the compilation’s presentation in Krasnodar in January 2014. In March 2014 a new drummer Vladimir Lyashkov (ex-“Beheaded Zombie”, ex-“Nabaath”, “Decay of Reality”) joined the band.

An Open Letter From FRIGHTWIG About Their New Video “War On Women”

Frightwig

A LETTER FROM FRIGHTWIG:

Some bands make pretty videos with happy lights, nice smelling colors and oh-so-crucial ‘action’ shots.

Some bands only sing about the birds and the bees and the light, fluffy naughtiness of frivolous lives spent in blissful twee-mode.

Some bands only play safe, cheerful, happy-happy-boom-boom-cha-cha-cha!

But some bands still give a shit enough to sing about real issues in real lives in the real world.

FRIGHTWIG, the legendary and seminal punk rockers from San Francisco, the ladies who put the ‘grrrrrr’ in riot grrrl, scratch that, the ladies who goddamn-well WERE all that shit and more before it was even a genre, have decided to make a tune about the elephant in the room – the elephant that is the current crack-down on women, women’s rights and women’s choice. It would’ve been easy to buzz out two and a half minutes of fuzzy punk rock with a whole slew of screaming, and it would’ve been easy to make the video some wicked sweaty bit of eye-candy.

But what about the story? What about this “War On Women”? When did it start? What’s going on? Who stood tall and proud and who continues to do? Well, when you watch the entire piece, made for less dough than a tray of Kanye’s wedding canapés, sit back and enjoy the educational ride. Soak up the news, feed off the lyrics and sink into the energy which crescendos into everything FRIGHTWIG stands for and all that FRIGHTWIG’s dynamic post-punk sound is about.

So yeah, if you tuned into “War On Women” expecting ladies wearing bacon dresses slaying dragons while hot Chippendale dancers trip the light fantastic in Narnia, then you my friend are S-O-L. But if you really really wanna know what the “War On Women” is, then hallelujah, you have found your place!

Spread the word and spread it fast. And make sure you come and HEAR that message LIVE when we come to your neighborhood on our West Coast tour. There’ll be message, madness, music, male strippers and unicorns, because in case you didn’t know, that’s the way us bad-asses fucking rock’n’roll!

No excuses. Look, listen, learn, laugh and love the ‘Wig this summer.

 Thank you,
FRIGHTWIG

Sarah Teets (MindMaze) and Christy Campbell (Theatrum Mundi) Tuesday (6/17) night on Women of Metal Radio

This Tuesday 6/17/2014 8pm CDT on Insane Realm Radio  We’ve hit a two run homer Christy Campbell of out February 2014 Band of the Month Theatrum Mundi and Sarah Teets from MindMaze join Jayson on the show to talk about their bands and the upcoming Women of Metal Fest I.

Christy campbell
Christy Campbell – Theatrum Mundi – Vocals

Theatrum Mundi is a female-fronted symphonic metal band from Springfield, MO. Their music takes you back to the world of England’s Queen Elizabeth I, a time when Shakespeare was composing sonnets, opera was first heard, and the Spanish Inquisition was terrorizing with ruthless efficiency. All that, plus metal guitars.

The music takes you on an epic journey where you will experience quiet moments of beauty, the intense release of operatic metal, and everything in between, with vocal melodies soaring above the fray by a duo of classically-trained vocalists, Christy Campbell and Stacey Elizabeth Luehrs, backed up by a world-class chamber chorus.

After two years of honing their songs live, in 2013 Theatrum Mundi released The Eyes of the Realm in 2013, The album received high acclaim by fans, radio, and critics alike, winning 2013 Best Symphonic Metal Album from The Symphonic Metal Show on AiiRadio, and garnering the February 2014 Band of the Month from The Women of Metal Show on Insane Realm Radio.

Sarah Teets
Sarah Teets – MindMaze – Vocals

MindMaze also made it onto the ballot for Best Metal Band on the 2012 and 2013 Lehigh Valley Music Awards. The band reached an international audience with the release of their first full-length album “Mask of Lies” in February 2013. Featuring almost 60 minutes of original metal, “Mask of Lies” aims to satisfy fans of Traditional, Progressive, and Power Metal and all points in between with in-your-face metal anthems, sprawling epics, and melodic balladry.

The group’s sound strives to be something truly unique while paying homage to their variety of influences. Fans of Iron Maiden can admire the harmonized guitar wizardry and galloping bass lines, while fans of Savatage can admire the use of piano work alongside heavy rhythm guitar playing. Fans of Dream Theater and Rush can admire the bass and drum interplay as well as the variety of time signature changes, but most of all there is something to be said for the quality level of songwriting the band strives to achieve.

The band has always been female fronted, but has never allowed being female fronted to dictate the style of music they play. Vocalist Sarah Teets displays both power and range in her vocal work, which maintains a cleanness that still has grit when it needs to. Matched with the impressive yet tasteful playing of the rest of the band (including brother Jeff Teets on guitar/keyboards and Kalin Schweizerhof on drums as well as live bass by Mike Lepond of Symphony X and Rich Pasqualone) and an exciting live performance to boot, MindMaze are winning audiences over with every show.

Women of Metal Band of the Month July 2014 (Candidates)

Women of Metal Band of the Month July 2014 (Candidates)

SAVN:
SAVNNorwegian goth metal legends The Sins Of Thy Beloved have been dormant since 2000 – following the release of their second album “Perpetual Desolation” – and after years of a rumored reunion, Stig Johansen and Anders Thue have instead risen from the ashes with a new band, SAVN, and a new vision.

The seeds for SAVN (translated: Deprivation) officially took root when multi-instrumentalist Stig contacted Midnattsol vocalist and long-time friend Carmen Elise Espenæs about singing one song for the planned SAVN album. Carmen agreed, and Stig and Anders (keyboards) were so pleased with the final result they invited her to sing on the entire record. With Midnattsol rendered inactive for the time being due to personal commitments within the band, and her new role as a singer, as well as a mother of an adorable daughter, the Norwegian powerhouse found herself with enough time and refueled with energy to take part in this new musical journey.

And, how did all this come together as a band?
“In the beginning they just wanted me here and there in parts of the songs”, Carmen reveals, “but I became more and more involved as we worked. There were some parts that I asked if we could change them because I had a chorus or melody line that needed to be in there. They decided that it would be best to say that I’m part of the band. I loved the music when I first heard it, and working with them in the studio was a great experience.”

SAVN is uncharted territory for the trio in that the music is unlike anything created by The Sins Of Thy Beloved or Midnattsol.
There are obvious metal and goth influences within the music – very reminiscent of early Theatre Of Tragedy in places (‘The Demons In Me’, ‘Now Or Never’) – and prominent folk elements (‘Musical Silence’, ‘All I Want’, ‘I Am Free’), but it’s also surprisingly rock-oriented and heavy that it can’t be pigeonholed as a “typical” female fronted goth/metal. The music is warm and upbeat while the lyrical concepts are inviting you on a journey and touching your soul.

SAVN is unique, not simply following trends. SAVN have composed the music and Carmen wrote all the lyrics. Carmen was given complete creative freedom, including re-writing existing lyrics to suit her own ideas of what the songs should sound like. The trio also wrote some songs as a group.
”It’s fantastic”, Carmen says of exploring new musical territory with SAVN, “I feel it brings me back to who I am. If I go for a really long time not making music I lose something of myself. Getting into doing SAVN really makes me feel alive. And I have absolutely no clue why, but all the ideas for the song melodies came so fast. I have to say I’ve never been so satisfied when making a new album, and I think the vocal melodies on this one are the best I’ve ever done. They’re catchier, I think, probably because the song structures are simpler so that people will want to sing along and listen to the songs over and over.”

SAVN’s self titled debut album, recorded, mixed and produced by Alex Krull (Atrocity, Leaves’ Eyes) at Mastersound Studios in Germany, features several guest performers. Carmen’s sister Liv Kristine (Leaves’ Eyes) appears on ’I Am Free’, while Michelle Darkness (End Of Green) turns up on ’The Demons In Me’. On the musical side, fiddle players Dag Bjørkedal and Lillian Hodne play a large part in rounding out the SAVN sound. And, additional strings were provided by the famed Lingua Mortis Orchestra on ‘Sorrowful’ and ‘Lengselens Hånd’, directed and recorded by composer and Rage guitarist Victor Smolski.

All the guest appearances on the album are important; all of them special, but Carmen is particularly fond of ‘I Am Free’ that is featuring her sister, Liv Kristine. It marks the first time the siblings have recorded one of Carmen’s songs together.

“I don’t remember if it was Liv that asked me about doing a song or if I asked her, but we talked about it and thought it would be a great idea. And we didn’t just take any song. There was a part in ’I Am Free’ that I felt was perfect for Liv”, says Carmen.

And in fact, perhaps Liv Kristine describes SAVN best from the point of view of an observer and participant of the album recordings: “If you like the early Theatre Of Tragedy, you’ll enjoy SAVN”, says Liv, “it’s very down to earth. Stig was in The Sins Of Thy Beloved and there are things he really loves about that period of bands like Sirenia and Tristania. He’s always been influenced by these bands and what he put together with Savn is like a dream come true”. And she comments: “I love the album. It’s an excellent piece of art”.

Front woman Jill Janus on the upcoming tour:

“North America, prepare for facemelting! HUNTRESS is stoked to join the coveted Arch Enemy tour this fall. It’s an exciting time for women in heavy metal; we’re honored to be touring with Arch Enemy as the new era with Alissa White-Gluz begins. Kreator joining this killer tour makes us ecstatic, having been fans for many years. HUNTRESS is ready to rage!”

Whenever they have a free moment, the band is hard at work on their third studio album. Andrew Alekel (Foo Fighters, No Doubt, Queens of the Stone Age, Clutch) and James A. Rota (Sound City, Fireball Ministry) will be handling production duties on the upcoming release.  More info and news on HUNTRESS’ new album will be made available soon.

HUNTRESS is ascending rapidly within the ranks of heavy metal.  The band released their debut album Spell Eater in 2012, followed closely by Starbound Beast in 2013. They toured relentlessly in 2013, supporting mega metal acts Lamb of God, Danzig and touring with the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival. HUNTRESS continues their quest to bring true heavy metal to the masses.  Their video for the song “Zenith” (directed by Phil Mucci) is blowing minds and was nominated for The Revolver Magazine Golden God Award in the “Best Film and Video” category.  HUNTRESS’Best Music Video Lists 2013: #1 Daily Gridhouse, #1 The Church of Metal, Video of the Year Unsung Melody, #3 Noisecreep, #4 Revolver Magazine, #4 Loudwire. Starbound Beast was also voted #5 in LA Weekly’s Best L.A.
